Jubilee by Shea Homes is a 55+ active adult community in a beautiful setting with two golf courses running through it and a private Puget Sound beach. Set two counties to the south of the Seattle area near the state capital of Olympia, Jubilee makes luxury retirement living affordable through lower home prices and a lower cost of living generally in Thurston county. The modern, one-level, and mostly two bedroom homes are clustered in multiple neighborhood loops in among the golf courses. A trail system leads down to a private beach on Puget Sound with a Mount Rainier and Olympic Mountain view. The enormous Jubilee lodge is the community gathering place for social events and entertainment.
Jubilee Lodge
On a recent visit to the Jubilee Lodge the swimming pool was busy with visiting grandkids (visitors are allowed in the pool 2 hours per day), residents were getting a workout in on the exercise equipment, and a presentation was going on about travel in Vietnam. Social and club events are frequent at the lodge, which has become the heart of an active, vibrant community. My parents have made dozens of new friends since relocating to Jubilee from the Seattle area. The amenities of the lodge include:
- Dramatic, high-ceilinged living room with wall of windows, fine woodwork, comfy furniture, and fireplace
- Large, attractive bar off the living room for serving refreshments
- Big screen TV for group viewing of sports events
- Community kitchen for pot lucks
- Ball room and multiple meeting rooms
- Large swimming hall with hot tub and pool. The pool is chlorine-free and kept comfortably warm. Very nice – one of my favorite pools anywhere.
- Back porch with view of golf course for barbecues
- Exercise room with lots of equipment and TVs

Jubilee Beach
Jubilee features a two mile trail for bikes or pedestrians down to a private beach on Puget Sound. The beach affords a great view of Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains. An old broken pier marks the location of a WWII munitions facility. An old TV commercial for Jubilee showed a retired couple dancing on the beach. That’s become our inside joke that we are hiking down to the beach to find the dancing seniors.
The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie
Two 18 hole golf courses wind through Jubilee, providing golf course views to many of the homes and wide open spaces to enjoy when walking about the community. The courses are public and have their own lodge and dining facility, see The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie.
Life in Thurston County
Recreational opportunities abound in Thurston County. South Puget Sound can be accessed through multiple parks and Olympia’s many marinas. Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Hood Canal, Tacoma, Seattle, Portland, and the ocean beaches lie within day trip distance. Olympia’s attractions include the Capitol complex, the Farmers’ Market, and the waterfront boardwalk. The Washington Center for the Performing Arts brings culture to Olympia. It’s an attractive retirement destination for homeowners cashing out of the more expensive Seattle area, which is exactly the calculation my parents made back in 2003. They are very happy with the move.
Financial Considerations
Homes range in size from 1,224 to 2,800 square feet. Most have 2 bedrooms, except for the very largest. Resale prices at this time of writing range from $199,000 to $469,000. Dues are reasonable at $183 per month.
