This beautiful Skagit River House sits on the south bank of the Skagit River in the Cape Horn community near the town of Concrete.  Concrete serves as the gateway to the North Cascades National Park with its recreational opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, biking, kayaking, snow shoeing, and more.  The area is reached from Seattle in under 2 hours by highways I-5 and 20, making it a nice spot for weekend getaways to a second vacation home.

I visited this terrific house on Cedar Street in early September at the end of our short burst of sunny summer weather in 2011.  The first outstanding feature a visitor encounters is its Great Room with soaring cedar ceilings, dramatic Nooksack Bull Elk head, and wall of windows that drink in the river view.  Smaller details then attract the eye as you are drawn into the room: the fireplace trimmed with river rock, the woodwork on the staircase ascending to the loft, and the massive timber post at the corner of the kitchen and supporting the loft.

The spacious kitchen with matching black appliances provides plenty of cabinets and counter space.  The kitchen sits at the back of the Great Room for an integrated entertainment space.

The Master Suite is found upstairs behind the loft.  From the loft one enjoys the most dramatic views over the Great Room and out to the forest and river beyond the wall of windows.  The high, steepled ceilings continue into the very large master bedroom itself.  The master suite further features a pretty cedar and pine deck, a large master bathroom with separate tub and shower, and walk-in closet.

Two bedrooms downstairs, a laundry room, 2 bathrooms, and a big 2 car garage complete the interior space of this part of the house.

Outdoor Living and Entertainment

But you’re not likely to explore the house in detail or even find the master suite before you are drawn out to the top attraction of the property: its riverside outdoor entertainment area with its covered patio, verdant back yard, and the fast-flowing, beautiful river.  The covered patio is a wonderful design element, extending the season during which the homeowners can enjoy the outdoors and the river view.  The cedar siding at the back of the patio, the cedar overhang above, and the well-crafted staircase give shelter and provide an attractive backdrop to the river and forest view that unfolds below.  That staircase ascends to another surprise: a spacious guest quarter at the peak of this half of the house above the garage.

A short path leads down the to river’s edge, where one can enjoy an unobstructed view of the surrounding mountains and the opposite bank.  The house is elevated up out of the flood zone.
